Fiona Maisels

I completed my PhD on the ecology of mouflon in Cyprus (Edinburgh University) in 1988, and have since worked in the Central African tropical forest region. I am a conservation scientist and advise WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) on surveys and monitoring in Central Africa. My expertise covers survey methodologies, wildlife abundance and distribution, wildlife ecology and protected area management. I have published over 70 peer-reviewed papers and 40 book chapters, mostly on wildlife conservation in Africa. Posts held in the past and to date include: membership of the Scientific Commission of UNEP-GRASP (Great Apes Survival Partnership) 2007-2014, IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group 2007- present; IUCN Great Ape Section Executive Committee 2013-present; IUCN Red Colobus Network 2020-present; IUCN African Elephant Specialist Group 2011-present; and IUCN Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group 2017- present. I was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology in 2013. I was Hon. Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh 1989-2007 and then at the University of Stirling 2008-2016. Since 2018 I have been an Hon. Professor at Stirling, specifically in the African Forest Ecology Group.
