I am a philosopher of healthcare and illness. I study the many ways that experiences of illness are made worse by social prejudices and injustices. Philosophy can help patients, their advocates, and healthcare practitioners to remove these obstacles to effective and empathetic healthcare.

With my colleague Professor Havi Carel, I pioneer the study of 'epistemic injustices' in healthcare - the ways that patients can be 'silenced' in their interactions with healthcare practitioners or within medical environments. We're also keen to emphasise the complexity of experiences of illness - in ways that avoid rigid pessimism or dogmatic 'bright-siding'.
