Ibrar is currently a Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences, Education & Social Work at Queens University Belfast. His fields of research are Literacy Studies, Digital Literacy, Applied Linguistics, and Education.

He is author of the book 'Assignments as Controversies' (2017) published by Routledge/T&F, whch examines student writing and digital literacies. He was also a Senior Research Associate on the ESRC funded 'Academics' Writing' project which explored the dynamics of knowledge creation in contemporary universities.

Prior to this Ibrar was appointed at the University of Bradford, and began his career in community learning and Further Education.

He is also a co-convener of the Digital University Network for the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE).
