Jamaal Abdul-Alim

Lecturer in Journalism, University of Maryland

Jamaal Abdul-Alim is a veteran journalist who covers a wide range of topics, including chess, child development, crime, education, foster care, Hip Hop and Islam.

His articles have appeared in a wide range of publications, including U.S. News & World Report; The Wall Street Journal, Washington Monthly, astronomy.com and American Cemetery.

He was a Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellow at the University of Michigan (Class of 2008) and a Spencer Education Journalism Fellow at Columbia University (Class of 2014).

Jamaal currently serves as education editor at the U.S. edition of The Conversation. Previously, Jamaal held staff writer positions at the old Milwaukee Sentinel, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; Youth Today; and Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.

He is an active member of the Education Writers Association and the Chess Journalists of America.
