Professor of Clinical Infection, Microbiology and Immunology, University of Liverpool

I am a translational infectious disease researcher, educated in medical biology, public health epidemiology and medicine, and with work experience in clinical epidemiological research, laboratory research, and product development. The focus of my research has been prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI), including GCP-compliant clinical trials of new prevention technologies, evaluation of novel rapid diagnostics, and research on the cervicovaginal microbiome and mucosal immunology. I am from the Netherlands but I lived and worked in the United States and Africa for 14 years. I have co-founded three clinical research sites in Africa: the UZ-UCSF Women's Health Program in Harare, Zimbabwe (1995); Rinda Ubuzima in Kigali, Rwanda (2004); and Centro de Investigac?o de Doencas Infecciosas (CIDI) at the Catholic University of Mozambique in Beira, Mozambique (2008). I have published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and books.
