Jens H Krebs

I am a Senior Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth where I teach and research in the areas of Commercial Law, Consumer Law, Contract Law, LegalTech and Law and Technology. I obtained an LLB in 2013 from Swansea University and went on to undertake a study for my PhD on 'Online Contracting and the Supply of Digital Content to Consumers' which I completed in 2018.

My research focuses on contractual issues on e-commerce and consumer law as well as contemporary issues of information technology law. The immediate focus is on the consumer’s position in e-commerce transactions, particularly where the product in question is digital content.

Before turning to an academic legal career, I worked as a software engineer In Germany which places me in a position to tackle the legal issues from a strong technological background. This background informs my research and enables me to find innovative solutions to global issues on the law and technology. There is a growing need for research on legal and technological issues surrounding smart contracts, distributed ledger technology and self-executing contracts. On a global scale, there is lack of understanding as to the possibilities and limits of these technologies. I collaborate with academics on a national and international basis on projects, conferences and articles, informing about the technology and revealing and exploring relating issues.
