Jeremy David Engels

Jeremy David Engels studies the rhetoric and philosophy of democracy. His research asks the question, what practices of the care of the self are necessary for us to be confident, competent, capable, compassionate, ethical citizens of the world?

He is the author of The Art of Gratitude (2018), The Politics of Resentment: A Genealogy (2015), and Enemyship: Democracy and Counter-Revolution in the Early Republic (2010). For his work, he has been awarded the Karl Wallace Award and the New Investigator Award from the National Communication Association. Jeremy is also a yoga teacher and the co-owner of Yoga Lab Studio in State College, PA. Based on research in the U.S., Europe, and India, he is currently writing a new book that describes the how Americans have engaged with Indian philosophy as they wrestle with the truly difficult questions about the meaning and purpose of life.
