Dr. Jeremy Herren leads icipe's Spirovector project. He is interested in the interactions between maternally transmitted endosymbiontic bacteria and their insect hosts.
Dr. Herren's research goals are centered on gaining a better understanding of diverse insect endosymbioses on an evolutionary, mechanistic and physiological level and exploring their potential use as a means to control crop pests and insect-vector borne diseases.
He is currently investigating the potential utility of mosquito endosymbiotic Spiroplasmas as a tool for blocking malaria transmission.
