Lecturer in Natural History, University of South Wales

Dr Jeremy Smith has a PhD in the population ecology of small migratory song birds, the Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), and the impact that climate change is having on this species. He is also a lecturer at the University of South Wales and works as a lead Data Analyst at Eco-explore CIC.

His PhD research focused on identifying the direct and indirect links between climate change variables (rainfall, temperature, hours of sunlight etc) and population declines of the Pied Flycatcher in Wales.

He used a novel statistical method, Integral Projection Models (IPMs), to quantify the effect that plasticity of laying date has on survival and fecundity and how these all feedback into each other.

Using a historic data set from mid- South Wales and fieldwork from 2 sites in South and Mid Wales, he studied changes in laying dates due directly to climate from those indirectly related i.e. food availability.
