Associate Professor of History, Virginia Military Institute

Born and raised in Germany, Jochen S. Arndt is Associate Professor of History at the Virginia Military Institute (USA) where he teaches courses on African and World history. With the support of the Social Sciences Research Council and the American Historical Association, he conducts research on the history of ethnic identities in South Africa. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Southern African Studies and the Journal for the Study of the Middle East and Africa. His first book Divided by the Word: Colonial Encounters and the Remaking of Zulu and Xhosa Identities was published by the University of Virginia Press in March 2022, and the Wits University Press in October 2022.
