Qualified as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Nairobi in 1978, PhD from the University of Liverpool in 1982 and DVSc in 1999. Has taught at the University of Nairobi, the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg. Held several visiting fellowships at universities in the UK, Canada and the United States of America.
