John Speakman is a 1000 Talents Professor at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology in the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, and a Professor at the Institute of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Aberdeen in the UK.

His work focuses on energy balance in both animals and humans, which has broad implications for our understanding of issues such climate effects on animal distributions and factors limiting animal populations as well as medical issues such as obesity and ageing. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, The UK Academy of Medical Sciences and the European Academy of Sciences (Academia Europeae). In 2015 he was awarded a Wolfson merit professorship by the UK Royal Society and won the Chinese Academy of Sciences prize for International co-operation.
