Dr Hill joined the KCL defence studies department in July 2005 after completing his BSc Econ, MSc Econ and PhD in the Department of International Politics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He was the Academic Director for the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Maritime) from September 2006 to August 2007, and for the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) from January 2010 to June 2011. Dr Hill is current the chair of the department’s REF reading team and subject matter expert for Africa. Dr Hill has also lectured and taught on a range of Africa related topics at the Royal College of Defence Studies, the Nigerian Armed Forces Command and Staff College, the South African National War College and the Serbian Military Academy. Dr Hill’s research falls within the area of African security studies. In particular, he is interested in Islamism and Islamist insurgent and terror groups operating in North and West Africa; corruption and security in Nigeria; and the challenges of state and nation building in postcolonial Africa.
