Jose Prieto Garcia

Associate Professor in Natural Products and Phytochemistry, Liverpool John Moores University

Dr Jose M Prieto Garcia is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Natural Products (Phytochemistry) of the Centre for Natural Products Discovery at the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences (Liverpool John Moores University).

Previously he held two EU funded postgraduate research positions at the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry of the University of Pisa (2001-2004) and the School of Pharmacy of the University of London (2005-2006) where he became a Lecturer in Pharmacognosy at the Centre for Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy at the School of Pharmacy (University of London 2006-2012). After the incorporation of the School into University College London he was Course Director of the Master in Pharmacognosy / Master in Medicinal Natural Products and Phytochemistry (2012-2020). During this time, he has also been a Visiting Professor at University of Brasilia (2016-2018) and invited Lecturer in the University of Valencia (current) and the University of Mahidol (2015) and external Examiner of the BSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of East London (2014-2018).

Dr Prieto Garcia has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 20010. He has about two decades of graduate and postgraduate research and teaching experience in phytochemistry, natural product drug discovery and development, pharmacognosy, instrumental analyses and chromatography. He supervised to completion more than 10 PhDs, published over 70 impact factor journal publications and as many communications to scientific congresses. With over 4,500 citations, his ResearchGate score is in the top 2.5%.

Dr Prieto Garcia is the co-author of the 3rd Edition of the Fundamentals in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry book, an international reference textbook in the field of natural products.

Dr Prieto Garcia is Associated Editor for: Frontiers in Pharmacology (Section Ethnopharmacology), Biomolecules, Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice and the International Journal of Food Science. He is a consultant for the herbal medicine, food supplement and cosmetic industry. He specialises on Advice for the registration of THRM, expert reports, indications, formulation design and development of analytical methods for herbal raw ingredients, herbal APIs and final herbal products, Biostandardisation, and application of Artificial intelligence to product design.

His research is in the area of natural products pharmacology and chemistry (anticancer, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and metabolic interactions with drugs) encompassing the application of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, next-generation sequencing and advanced analytical techniques.
