Joseph M. Gabriel

Associate Professor of History and Social Medicine, Florida State University

I am a historian of American medicine and the biomedical sciences. My scholarship focuses on the contested relationship between scientific and technological innovation, state regulation of the market, and social and cultural change. Much of it focuses on the history of drugs and pharmaceuticals in the nineteenth and early twentieth-centuries.

I am the author of Medical Monopoly: Intellectual Property Rights and the Origins of the Modern Pharmaceutical Industry (University of Chicago Press, 2014)
