Professor Emeritus of History, University of Huddersfield

I research 19th and 20th century British history, with a focus on working class life in Britain, labour history, the Communist Party, the Independent Labour Party, the Labour Party, among other similar organisations.

I have also researched and written about the history of policing in Britain, as well as gambling, leisure and sports. I have published more than 50 books and 100 articles and chapters on these subjects, much of which deals with the years 1900 to 1950. This includes books on the 1926 General Strike, a history of the Labour Party in the 20th century and a history of British trade unionism covering the period of 1770 to 1990.

In 2012, I became president of the Society for the Study of Labour History, which publishes the Labour History Review journal.
