Kristien Boelaert

Reader in Endocrinology, Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research, University of Birmingham

Kristien Boelaert is a Reader in Endocrinology at the Univeristy of Birmingham and practising Consultant Endocrinologist in carge of theThyroid Services at the UHB NHS Foundation Trust.

She has a varied portfolio of clinical and translational research including the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid dysfunction, thyroid nodules and cancer as well as the management of iodine deficiency.Her laboratory research interests focus on the pathogenesis of thyroid cancer and in particular on the identification of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for patients with thyroid tumours. Kristien has attracted major grant funding from the Medical Research Council, The Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and the British Thyroid Foundation.

Kristien heads her own research group and has a rapidly growing publication list of original research papers, reviews and book chapters in the field of molecular and clinical thyroidology. She is an enthusiastic communicator and is a regular speaker at national and international meetings. Furthermore, she is a lecturer on several Teaching Programmes within the University and holds important national and international roles in the training of future doctors.

Kristien is a strong advocate of translational research and aims to build an effective bridge that enables scientific knowledge to be incorportaed into the care of patients with thyroid disease.
