I am Director of United Nations University-World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), Finland, and Professor of Development Economics in IDPM, the University of Manchester, UK (on leave).

Previously, I have been a member of faculty in the University of East Anglia in the UK, Massey University in New Zealand, the Australian National University, and the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research in India.

My principal areas of research are political economy, macroeconomics, international trade, and the analysis of labour markets in developing countries.

While the principal region of my research is India, I also work on East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
