Assistant Professor of African Politics, Institute of Political Science, Leiden University

Leila Demarest is Assistant Professor of African Politics at the Institute of Political Science. Her research interests include peace and conflict dynamics, social movements, political parties, political communication, and ethnicity and religion in Sub-Saharan Africa. Her most recent research project focuses on power-sharing and party politics in Nigeria’s National Assembly. Her teaching activities focus on African politics and research methods.

Leila joined Leiden University in October 2018. Previously, she worked at the Centre for Research on Peace and Development (CRPD) at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium. She also obtained her PhD in Social Sciences (2017) from the KU Leuven as a doctoral fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).
