Secretary for Science Policy at the Australian Academy of Science, and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, UNSW Sydney

Professor Field AM is the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of New South Wales. He is responsible for the strategic direction and performance of the University.

Biography

Professor Field is a graduate of the University of Sydney (PhD 1979) and, following Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and at Oxford, took up a position at the University of Sydney in 1982. He was awarded a DSc by the University of Sydney in 1991. He held the positions of Head of the School of Chemistry (1997 - 2001), Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Science (1998 - 2001), Deputy Chair of the Academic Board and Chair of the University Research Committee (1999 to 2001), and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) (2001 - 2003). In 2005, Professor Field was appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of New South Wales and he was appointed as Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 2016.

Professor Field is currently the Chair of the Deputy and Pro Vice-Chancellors (Research) Committees for both the Group of Eight and Universities Australia and serves as a Director on numerous Boards including the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, NewSouth Innovations (NSi), NICTA and UniSeed.

Professor Field received the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) Organic Chemistry Medal in 1994, and the RACI Leighton Medal in 2010. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and has published over 200 research articles in organometallic chemistry.
