Professor Louis Nel has established a world-renowned research program at the University of Pretoria. Over the past 25 years, he focused on a better understanding of the rabies lyssavirus - towards the control, prevention and elimination of rabies in dogs, wildlife and humans. He has published more than 250 papers in scientific journals and books. His leadership in rabies networks across the world culminated in the foundation of the Pan African Rabies Control Network (PARACON) in 2015 and in the ARACON and MERACON networks serving nations of Asia and the Middle East/Europe, respectively (both established in 2018)
