Luke Cahill is a PhD student at the University of Bath. His thesis, "'How many divisions has he got?' Influence of the Holy See on US foreign policy, 1990-2003", explores the influence of the Holy See on US foreign policy. It argues that the alliance the existed between the two during the Cold War has been dramatically overstated.

When the Cold War ended, whatever influence the Holy See had dramatically
diminished. Furthermore, its influence is reduced by the polarisation
and divisions within Catholicism in the United States. This makes the
Holy See significantly less influential.
