My areas of interest include: vitamin-related nutrient-gene interactions in the context of the human lifecycle and health and disease. The majority of my research relates to folic acid, including its chemistry, biochemistry and molecular genetics. However, other vitamins including vitamin D and further B vitamins also focus in my research program. Areas under investigation have/do involve(d) birth defects, cancer, vascular disease and neuro-cognitive phenotypes. My other area of interest is in evolutionary medicine sometimes referred to as Darwinian medicine. In this respect I'm particularly interested in how a mismatch between ancient genes and contemporary diets conspire to cause many of the so called diseases of affluence. Also under this umbrella I'm interested in aspects of the developmental origins of adult disease and how early life events might influence adult degenerative disorders.
