I am interested in the ecology, evolution, and conservation of north temperate and neotropical vertebrates, especially in relation to issues of human-induced habitat degradation and restoration. I realize that the designation "vertebrates" is exceedingly broad, but it reflects my experiences working with diverse taxa including fishes, birds, and mammals. I prefer not concentrate on a particular group of organisms, but on a common theme: how species' ecological characteristics and the movements of individuals influence population level responses to landscape alteration or management actions.

Other areas of interest include population and community ecology, endangered species conservation, international conservation, marine protected areas, ecological economics, and environmental policy.
