Mary Hames

Dr Mary Hames, whose PhD from UCT focused on black feminist pedagogy and teaching through creative practice, is the former director of the Gender Equity Unit at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). At UWC she worked consistently with student volunteers on civic engagement programmes challenging sexism, heteronormativity, violence against women, food justice and ableism. Currently formally retired, she continues to co-teach, research and supervise at the university, while pursuing pottery, gardening and anti-elitist approaches to veganism.
