Why do we drink alcohol, and why does drinking become a problem for some people? I conduct research into the psychological mechanisms that underlie the development of alcohol problems and other 'addictions'. My specific interests are in cognitive control, impulsivity, and implicit (or automatic) cognitive processes. I was trained as an experimental psychologist, and I still do a lot of laboratory research with healthy volunteers. I also do research with adolescents to understand the development of drinking habits, and work with people with alcohol dependence to understand the process of recovery. My research has been funded by the MRC, ESRC, and Wellcome Trust, among other organisations.
