Matthew DiGiuseppe

Assistant Professor of International Relations, Leiden University

My research and teaching interests include international and comparative political economy, armed conflict, interstate alliances and the domestic roots of foreign policy.

I am currently the PI on the Microfoundations of Debt Crisis (MIDEBT) project that is funded by an ERC Starting Grant.

My primary research agenda explores how government fiscal constraints, namely a state's access to sovereign credit, influence policy regarding domestic and internal stability and security. Touching on a broader theme of exploring the economic motivations behind political action, I also examine questions regarding sovereign creditworthiness, alliance politics, international trade, economic crises, labor rights and foreign aid.
