Michael Mehling

Michael Mehling is a Professor of Practice at the University of Strathclyde School of Law, where he teaches comparative climate change law and policy, carbon pricing and climate finance, and sustainable energy governance.

He holds a simultaneous appointment as the Deputy Director of the Centre for Energy and Environmental Policy Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and as a Research Scientist with the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI). Previously, he was founding President of the Ecologic Institute in Washington DC, an environmental think tank with partner offices in Berlin and Brussels, and has held research and teaching posts at Georgetown University and the Universities of Greifswald, Helsinki and Constance.

Michael is also the founding editor of the Carbon & Climate Law Review, the first academic journal focused on legal aspects of climate change, and has contributed to the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He also co-chairs the research outreach and engagement efforts of the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC), a global initiative convening leaders from across government, the private sector and civil society to expand the use of carbon pricing.

He is a Member of the Boards of Directors of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources – United States (IUCN-US) and the Ecologic Institute, both in Washington, DC, and a Partner with Ecologic Institute in Berlin. Additionally, he is a Manager of the Konrad-von-Moltke Fund, a Member of the international research network Climate Strategies, and an Associate Researcher with the Energy Policy Research Group (EPRG) at the University of Cambridge.

Trained as an attorney, Michael specialises in legal and institutional aspects of energy and environmental policy, with a focus on policy instruments for climate change mitigation and adaptation, climate and energy finance, and interlinkages with the international trade regime.
