I teach international security studies and Asian history at SOAS. I have spent my career thus far at the Centre for Advanced Studies, National University of Singapore, the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo, and, since 2001, at SOAS University of London. I have recently joined the very exciting Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy after eighteen years in the Department of History (now the HRP) at SOAS, where I continue to hold a joint appointment. My main research interests are on the history of military logistics, conflict in modern and contemporary Asia, the history of violence globally and in Asia, and colonialism.
