Michelle Hartman

Professor and Director, Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University

My PhD is in Arabic Literature, the larger field being Middle Eastern / Islamic Studies, as the Institute at McGill. I have worked in the field now for 25+ years. My specialty is women's fiction, storytelling, and history, particularly in Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine. I have also worked in Arab Canadian and Arab American studies, particularly solidarities with Black Americans and Canadians. I have done several joint research projects on Black-Arab solidarity.
Also, I am a literary translator between Arabic and English and have published extensively on the politics of translation, translating women, and the dynamics of languages and language use.
