Emeritus Professor in Health Policy, University of Huddersfield

Peter joined the University of Huddersfield in 1993. His career in Health Service practice, education, applied research and consultancy has been extensive being conducted in the UK and overseas. He was a founder of the Centre for Evidence Based Health Care within the University in 1997 in association with the then Kirklees and Calderdale Health Authority. This Centre paved the way for what is now the Centre for Health and Social Care Research.

Peter has a broad portfolio of professional activities. He has held senior advisory positions on the reform of British nurse education providing Consultancy and contributing to major national reports for the Department of Health, the Statutory Body for Nursing in the UK, the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, and five Irish Universities and on Nurse Education for the Kingdom of Bahrain.

In addition, Peter has published and spoken widely on health service policy and professional issues and has produced over the last decade, 50 refereed papers for scholarly journals. He also has extensive Editorial and Editorial Board experience. His most recent is entitled ‘Health Policy for Health Professionals’ that has become a standard text on many reading lists. Amongst other important policy priorities, it addresses the challenges to service providers arising from the bold polices to modernise the NHS.

Peter has substantial experience in the of peer review of research and is an External Adviser to the Health Research Board, Dail Eireann, Dublin and to the Welcome Foundation, London. He is a frequent External Assessor on Professorial and other senior academic Appointments Panels at home and abroad and in addition, he has occupied External Examiner appointments in other institutions continuously over two decades, including the examination 41 Research degrees. He has also extensive experience as a Supervisor and Internal Examiner of PhDs at Huddersfield and currently supervises PhD/EdD students as their Director of Studies.

Pete's services to the University were recognised in 2010 by the conferment of the Title of Emeritus Professor.
