Senior Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs, Rutgers University Newark

Peter is Senior Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs and Chief of Staff to Chancellor Nancy Cantor at Rutgers University – Newark. Previously, he served as Associate Vice President for Public Affairs at Syracuse University, the last in a number of positions he held at Syracuse over 25 years.

Peter came to Syracuse University in 1986 as a graduate student in SU’s Linguistics program, having earned his bachelor’s degree at Binghamton University of the State University of New York. Upon earning his master’s in 1988, he took a position as publications specialist with the Graduate School at Syracuse, and over the next 18 years held a series of academic administrative positions, including Assistant Dean of The Graduate School, Director of Recruitment for Graduate Enrollment Management, and Director of Academic Services for Graduate Enrollment Management. He was a successful grant writer for the Graduate School, having garnered more than $1 million in funding over the course of his 18 years there.

In late 2006, Peter joined the Division of Public Affairs as Director of Strategic Initiatives and advanced to Associate Vice President for Public Affairs 18 months later. In that capacity, he provided high-level strategic guidance on internal and external communications, collaborating closely with Chancellor Cantor, and other members of her senior leadership team on a wide range of written and public communications, including articles, speeches, presentations, and op-eds. He also has held responsibility for overseeing the Office of Publications and for fostering collaboration and coordination among communications professionals across the University’s schools and colleges.

Ever a student of the philosophy and history of higher education, he is the co-author with Nancy Cantor of a number of journal articles and chapters focused on re-emphasizing the public mission of American universities.
