Honorary Professor, Audiology and Speech Pathology, The University of Melbourne

Richard Dowell is Emeritus Professor of Audiology at the University of Melbourne and a senior consultant to the Victorian Cochlear Implant Program. Richard has worked in the research, development and clinical application of the cochlear implant device for over 40 years. He was in charge of audiology teaching at the University of Melbourne from 1989 to 2019 and was Department Head for audiology from 2005 until 2020 (and from 2011 for speech pathology). The cochlear implant device pioneered in Melbourne by Professor Graeme Clark has provided improved hearing for more than 1 million people with severe deafness around the world.
