I am interested in the use of infrared radiometers during laser-tissue interaction and its ability to reduce secondary damage but more recently I and my colleagues have been involved in developing the use of infrared radiometers to measure skin temperatures as a result of pandemics and identifying febrile individuals. I advised on setting up fever scanning using infrared technology at Calafate and Oschuaia Airports in Argentina, during the Swine flu (H1N1) pandemic in 2009, sponsored by the Argentinian Govt.
I have published over 30 infrared thermography publications and most notably chapters in the following medical reference books:

Biomedical Sensors, Edited by Deric Jones, Sensors for Medical Thermography and Infrared Radiation Measurements, E.F.J Ring, R. A. Thomas & K.J Howell, Momentum Press, New York, 2010, ISBN 978-1-60650-058-3

Radiometric Temperature Measurements. 2. Applications, Pulsed Photo-Thermal Radiometry, Dr. Roderick Thomas, Swansea Metropolitan University, Elsevier Inc, September 2009, ISBN: 1079-4042

Handbook of Non-Invasive Methods and the Skin, Second Edition (2006), Temperature and Thermoregulation, Chapter 87: Sensors and Handheld Devices for Surface Measurement of Skin Temperature, Dr R. A. Thomas, CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, 6000 Broken Sound Parkway NW, Suite 300, Boca Raton, FL 33487-2742, ISBN: 0-8493-1437-2

Medical Devices and Systems, The Biomedical Engineering Handbook 3rd Ed (2006), Chapter 19: Thermal Imaging in Surgery, Dr Paul Campbell, Institute of Medical Science and Technology, Universities of St Andrews and Dundee, Ninewells Hospital, Dr Roderick Thomas, CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, 6000 Broken Sound Parkway NW, Suite 300, Boca Raton, FL 33487-2742, ISBN 0-8493-2122-0

I am an expert witness in infrared thermography with the IET and Technical Thermology Editor of Thermology International, published by the European Association of Thermology (EAT): http://www.uhlen.at/thermology-international/ and also member of the European Association of Thermology.

I have examined at PhD level a number of infrared thermography research projects as a supervisor and external examiner for example;
2013, Comparison of Thermographic, EEG and subjective measures of affective experience of designed stimuli. Swansea Metropolitan University
2013, Quality Assurance in the democratisation of light-Based Therapies, University of Wales
2010, The Effect of Work Related Mechanical Stress on the Peripheral Temperature of the Hand, University of Glamorgan.
2009, Infrared Thermography for the Assessment of Microvascular Skin Blood Flow in a Specialist Connective Tissue Disease Unit, University of Glamorgan.
