Rory graduated from Solent University in 2010 with a degree in BA (Hons) Football Studies. Following this, he successfully completed an MSc in Sociology of Sport at Loughborough University. He returned to Solent on a part-time basis in 2011, before being appointed as a lecturer in 2014, and course leader in 2016. He completed his PhD in 2015 under the supervision of Professor Eric Anderson, Dr. Jason Tuck and Professor Stewart Cotterill (University of Winchester). This research focused on the construction of masculinities among Premier League academy footballers. Rory’s research continues to focus on the contemporary relationship between sport (especially football), homosexuality, and masculinity. He has published widely in leading journals and in monograph format. Rory's research has received media attention in national and local newspapers, international news agencies, and national radio. He also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in 2013, becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy shortly after.
