Executive Director, National Road Safety Council & Adjunct Professor, TARS, UNSW Sydney

Dr Soames Job is the Executive Director of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), Adjunct Professor at the University of NSW, and Principal of Global Road Safety Solutions. Soames has a wealth of road safety expertise including successful practical delivery, management, leadership, and research, and has long been a vocal and prominent campaigner in reducing road deaths and serious injuries. He has worked in road safety since 1980, in leadership, management, policy setting, delivery and academic research roles. He was a member of the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration, is Fellow and past National President of the Australasian College of Road Safety and former Deputy Chairman of ANCAP (Australian New Car Assessment Program), and was the Chair of the National Road Safety Executive Group, an inaugural member of the NRSC, and was Director of the New South Wales Centre for Road Safety (2003-2011), the lead agency for road safety for New South Wales. During the years Soames was the head of the lead government road safety agency for New South Wales (NSW), the road toll in NSW improved at a much faster rate than the rest of Australia, achieving rates approaching the best in the world, and breaking many records (lowest toll per 100,000 population since records began in 1908, lowest road toll number since 1944, and lowest toll of pedestrian deaths since records began).
Soames was a researcher and consultant in road safety, noise effects and health and risk psychology at the University of Sydney from 1985-2003, and held the position of Director, Health and Safety Psychology Research Centre.
Soames has worked extensively for international road safety. He has worked for the World Bank, the United Nations, International Standards Organisation (ISO), and the OECD in road safety, and has provided training for road safety staff from many countries in extended workshops, as well as delivering road safety policy development and reviews in Australia, Malaysia, Kuwait, New Zealand, Poland, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, and the USA. For this training, road safety staff have come to Australia, Tunisia, or the USA from dozens of countries. Mainly as member of a team, Soames has won 25 national and international awards in road safety. Soames has over 350 scientific publications. He was first listed in Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Science and Technology, Who’s Who in Health and Medicine in 1997/8, and is biographied in the Cambridge International Biographical Centre’s 2000 Outstanding People of the 20th Century and the American Biographical Institute’s 500 Leaders of Influence for his research and policy contributions to road safety, noise control, and health psychology.
