Sri Rahayu Utami

Professor in Soil Geochemistry, Universitas Brawijaya

My academic interest in soil science was started in Soil Science Undergraduate Study Program in IPB, Bogor Agricultural Institute (1981-1985). My interest in soil science was then sharpened when I studied Master degree (1990-1992) focusing in Soil Mineralogy and Micromorphology in International Training Centre for Soil Science, Geological Institute, Ghent University, Belgium. My thesis research was about characterization and management of Oxisols and Ultisols, which were typical for soils in the tropics. The Ph.D Program was then pursued, also in Ghent University (1994-1998), with the research topic of "Rational management aspects of volcanic ash soils in Java". This PhD research was evaluated by National Evaluation Board of Belgium, and given award (State Secretary for Development Cooperation Prize) From Belgium SSDC Ministry,1998, considering the potential impact of the research to meet the national need and to strengthen collaboration between two countries.
Right now, I have been active as one of the research counterpart in CRC 990 - Ecological and socioeconomic functions of tropical lowland rainforest transformation systems (Sumatra, Indonesia), an international collaborative research project between Goettingen University, Germany and Bogor Agricultural University, Tadulako University and Jambi University, funded by DFG, Germany, 2012-present. Research member in the scientific subproject: Nutrient use and retention efficiprogrammeency, free-living N2 fixation and soil and tree-stem N2O and CH4 fluxes in rainforest transformation systems. Research counterpart in DFG - Research Unit 995 “Biogeochemistry of paddy soil evolution”, organized by Department of Ecology and Ecosystem Sciences, Life Sciences, Technische Universität München (Germany, 2012-2016). Research member, International Research Cooperation sponsored by Europe Community, Smallholder Agroforestry Options for Degraded Soil (SAFODS), 2001- 2005. Research member, ACIAR-World Agroforestry Centre, Sumberjaya Watershed Management, West Lampung, Indonesia, 2002- 2005. Researcher on management of soils developed on volcanic ash (1994-present), reclamation of recent volcanic ejecta (2015-present), management of highly weathered soils (1990-present), phytoremediation of Hg comtaminated soils in gold mining area (2011-2013); characterization of paddy soils (2012-2018).
