I am a qualified and registered social worker (HCPC SW00246). From 1970 until 1984 I worked as a generic social worker, Duly Authorised Mental Welfare Officer (Approved Social Worker) and Senior Practitioner in rural and urban areas in the North and Midlands of England. From 1984 until I became an academic in 1995 I was a manager of social work and social care services in the statutory and voluntary sectors and Senior Regional Development Officer also in the North. Since becoming an academic I have taught on qualifying social work programmes at Diploma, Undergraduate, Masters and Postgraduate levels at five Universities. Upon retirement in 2011 I was appointed an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the School of Law and Social Justice at the University of Liverpool. I currently respond to media requests for comment on topical issues to do with children and their families especially the impact of the move from the Welfare State to welfare markets. I maintain scholarly activity including knowledge exchange, research and publications.
