Professor of Sociology & University Research Chair, University of Waterloo

SUZAN ILCAN is University Research Chair and Professor in the Department of Sociology and Legal Studies at the University of Waterloo and the Balsillie School of International Affairs. She received her PhD in Sociology from Carleton University. Before coming to the University of Waterloo, she held a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) from 2002-2011.

Suzan’s research is in the area of critical migration and border studies, with interests in refugee policies, gender and ethnicity, humanitarianism, and social justice and citizenship. Her recent research projects highlight the diverse ways displaced people negotiate borders, experience and counter precarious situations, remake “home”, and engage in resettlement and community-building initiatives. These projects focus on the MENA region, Europe, and Canada, with her most recent project dealing with migrant displacement, resettlement, and community-building in Cyprus.
