Professor of Sociology and Social Policy and Vice-Chancellor, Middlesex University

Graduated from Durham University in 1979 and, after a spell as a community worker in Belfast, returned to Durham to complete a PhD before returning to Northern Ireland to work at the University of Ulster and then Newcastle City Council as Head of Research. Subsequently appointed to Chairs in Sociology and Social Policy at Oxford Brookes University (where also Deputy Dean of Faculty), Teesside University (Dean of Faculty), Durham University (Dean of Queen's Campus and Director of the Wolfson Research Institute) and The Open University (Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Scholarship and Quality). Appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University from 1 July 2015.
