Director, Sustainable Places Research Institute, Cardiff University

Dr. T.C. Hales is Director of Cardiff University's Sustainable Places Research Institute and Reader in Earth Science. His work seeks to understand the relationship between environmental and social systems and environmental hazards. Since 2015, T.C. has worked the lower Kinabatangan River in Malaysian Borneo understanding the drivers and effects of tropical deforestation on erosion and carbon. He is particularly interested in how the changing shape of forests affects the rates of hazardous surface processes, such as riverbank erosion and landsliding. In 2019, he developed and currently Co-Chairs the community-based tropical reforestation project Regrow Borneo, that restores heavily degraded tropical forests with colleagues at Cardiff University.
