William Krause

My career has taken me along two paths that have intersected at Hollins. As a young musician, I dedicated myself to classical guitar, studying in Spain with José Tomas after my undergraduate education.

Returning to the University of Southern California I received my Master of Music, studying with Pepe Romero and James Smith. I eventually embraced musicology, earning my Ph.D. at Washington University in St. Louis and culminating in my recently published book, Federico Moreno Torroba, A Musical Life in Three Acts. (Oxford University Press, 2013, coauthor, Walter Clark) Parallel to these endeavors has been my professional life in arts administration, including several years as executive director of Opera Roanoke.

My position at Hollins – teaching guitar, music history, and arts administration – is the best of all possible worlds for me. Each day I am reminded of how fortunate I am to be a professor at Hollins University.
