Schizophrenia links found in human genome

A large-scale international study has identified 108 genetic sites across the human genome that are associated with schizophrenia.

The research team, including collaborators from University of Queensland, analysed DNA samples from nearly 37,000 schizophrenia patients and more than 110,000 control individuals. The schizophrenia-linked sites tended to cluster around genes expressed in the brain and in tissues important for immunity.

These findings provide evidence for a speculated link between schizophrenia and the immune system.
