Bees shake abdomens to say ‘I see you’

Asian honey bees attempt to ward off would-be predators by vibrating their abdomens from side to side, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences have found.

The researchers speculate that the abdominal vibration, which occurred when the bees were exposed to hornets from a predator species, constitutes a co-evolved “I see you” display, warning the hornets not to bother attacking. The vibration increased as the hornets came closer to the bees’ nest, and the hornets were less likely to attack the bees which displayed the vibration than bees of a different species which did not.
