Flies are three times more attracted to the colour blue than they are to yellow.
Researchers used these findings to develop a fly control device that entices flies using a range of “attractants”, including colour and smell. When testing the device, more than 40,000 flies were killed with just one insecticide application.
This development could assist in the development of super-effective fly control devices, limiting the spread of disease far more effectively than was previously possible.
