Epilepsy drug causes birth defects – depending on dose

Pregnant women taking the epilepsy drug valproate risk having a baby with severe birth defects.

Researchers at the University of Melbourne used data from more than 1,700 pregnant women with epilepsy for their study.

They showed that reducing the drug’s dose during the first trimester greatly lowered the risk of one of the most devastating birth defects.
