First fingernails found

Fingernails and toenails first appeared on primates around 55 million years ago, allowing the development of several critical functions.

The discovery also confirmed the belief that nails developed as primate body sizes decreased.

The development of fingernails appears to be linked with sensitive touch and a greater ability to grasp objects within primates.
