BirdLife International

BirdLife International is a global partnership of non-governmental organisations that strives to conserve birds and their habitats. The group was established in London in 1922 by ornithologist and conservationist T. Gilbert Pearson under the name International Committee for Bird Protection. The group was renamed International Committee for Bird Preservation in 1928, International Council for Bird Preservation in 1960, and BirdLife International in 1994. It has a membership of more than 2.5 million people and partner organisations in more than 100 countries.

Robust science underpins BirdLife’s conservation programmes, policy and advocacy and communications. These efforts are supported by the BirdLife Secretariat, working in close collaboration with a diverse range of universities, academic institutes, government agencies, non-governmental organisations and other bodies across the world. Their scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals make BirdLife a world-leader in conservation science.

BirdLife International is classified as an independent research organisation eligble for government funding through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
