Danish Meteorological Institute

DMI serves society with meteorological knowledge and data within the Commonwealth of Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland with surrounding waters and airspace. DMI began approximately 200 years ago, and is therefore one of the oldest state institutions in Denmark.

DMI has a research and development department with over 70 researchers and PhD students.

The research is mainly financed through external funds, e.g. EU grants or grants from the Danish research councils. A smaller part of DMI’s development is financed via the Finance Act.

DMI’s research is application-oriented. Eg. we develop models that can predict weather, climate or the spread of substances in the air or sea. We test and check how measurements from satellites can best be translated into useful knowledge. We study and map the future climate so that today’s Denmark can invest wisely in long-term sustainable infrastructure.
