Modified fungus targets fire ants

A fungus normally used for killing insects has been modified by scientists at the University of Florida to specifically kill fire ants in a surprisingly efficient manner.

The modified fungus targets the fire ant’s nervous system, increasing mortality rates by five to eight times.

The scientists also found they could adapt the modified fungus to other insect species such as mosquitoes.
